The South African casino and hospitality group, Sun International is doing its bit to support school children across the country. Individual casinos in the Sun International group, such as the Windmill Casino in Bloemfontein, are part of the group’s Educational Programme which incorporates sustainability elements. Thus, school children benefit from social, health and safety, economic and environment improvements in their day to day lives.
A recent project undertaken by the Windmill Casino has directly improved attendance rates at the school among its female students. School administrators found that many of the 600 young girls who attend the facility were continually absent since they had no access to sanitary products.
The casino thus installed a sanitary pad vending machine in the local school and the pupils receive a monthly token which they can use at the machine.
“No girl should be missing school due to lack of access to proper sanitary products and Windmill Casino hopes that the donation of the machine will help these young women focus on their studies and not have to worry about where they will find pads,” noted Windmill Casino’s General Manager, Johan Oosthuizen.
The project has been so successful that the school’s principal has already seen a vast improvement in attendance rates. This ensures that the students don’t fall behind in their studies and offer them peace of mind during school hours.
Sun International’s Educational Programme covers close to 40 schools across South Africa, slowly adding to its list since the project was launched in 2019. Speaking for Sun International, Heidi Edson said that during this time, the group has seen its endeavors pay off, as pass rates have increased.
Over time, Sun International has offered bursaries to pupils who excel at their studies, revamped multiple classrooms, built toilets for the use of staff and students, developed sports facilities and held workshops and study classes to help improve teachers’ and students’ knowledge.
Edson added: “I would encourage more initiatives such as Sun International’s Adopts the School Project because an investment in education is ultimately an investment in the future of our country and the global village of which we are an integral part.”
Every year since 2001, Sun City has been honored at the World Travel Awards. Some years, the resort even took home more than one title. Some of the awards given to Sun City over the years include:
